Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) Guidelines

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a procedure where brief electrical current is used to stimulate the brain and induce a generalized seizure for therapeutic reasons. The Utah Administrative Code, R523-8-5, Psychosurgery and Electroshock Therapy Procedures for Children, Legal Authority, details the process and approval procedure for children, prior to having psychosurgery or electroshock therapy administered.

The following forms are derived from Rule R523-8-5 and are to be used for any individual under the age of 18 who are:
• Recommended for ECT treatment and
• Who are committed to the physical custody of a local mental health authority, or
• Committed to the legal custody of the Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health.
